SUMMARY:Engineering Showdown: A Maryland STEM Fest Event
DESCRIPTION:What do engineers do? It depends on the engineer!\n\nCivil
engineering created the 1\,900 year old Roman Pantheon concrete dome that
is still in use today and it was also a civil engineer who brought us water
slides. Packaging engineers find ingenius ways to make packaging meet a
wide range of needs from being tamper-proof to medically sterile to
temperature controlled\; they are also responsible for the frustrating
plastic clamshell packaging used for batteries and large sales unit cartons
that trick consumers into believing the 2 oz. bottle they are purchasing is
much larger than expected.\n\nAt this unique forum\, you will meet
packaging engineer Denise Stevens and civil engineer Jay Silcox whose
combined experience ranges from designing rocket launch pads to creating
packaging for human tissue! Bring your questions and prepare to be informed
and entertained.\n\nThis event is designed for an adult audience.
Interested teens are also welcome to attend.\n\nThis is a Maryland STEM
Festival event.\n\n\nPRESENTER BIOS\n\nDenise Stevens has been a packaging
engineer for more than 30 years. She has experience in pharmaceutical and
medical device companies as well as veterinary products and even human
tissue (read skin). She received her Masters’ degree in Packaging Science
from Rochester Institute of Technology. Denise has two goals in life: 1)
playing with her grandchildren and 2) stimulating quilt shop economies
around the world.\n\nJay Silcox is a Professional Engineer who is currently
licensed in 11 states and Washington D.C. A Kent County High School
graduate with a BS in civil engineering from University of Maryland\, Jay's
experience ranges from inspecting crawl spaces to designing rocket launch
pads. Jay is an avid sci-fi reader and enjoys running ultramarathons and
 travel.\n\n
